Across the Commonwealth of Kentucky during the week of February 5 - 9, Family Resource Youth Services Center (FRYSC) Coordinators are celebrated for their efforts and support of area school children and families.
“There are over 850 Family Resource Youth Services Centers (FRYSC) led by a local coordinator working within the schools directly to support children and families,” according to Clarkson FRC Coordinator Ann Brooks. “Services provided in the school are unique to the individual child or family needs. Most recently our coordinators worked with families to provide Holiday Assistance for over 393 students, as well as collaborated with local community partners to assist families with their most basic needs: food, utilities, and clothing.”
Throughout the school year, the local coordinators: Barbara Allen (GCHS YSC), Kim Cannon (Caneyville/Lawler FRC), Ann Brooks (Clarkson FRC), and Shalee Watson (Leitchfield FRYSC) collaborate with area resources such as the GC Alliance Food Pantry, Community Action, GC SAFE, GC THRIVE, UK Extension Office, Adult Education, churches, businesses, and other civic groups.
“These partnerships are vital in supporting our children and families in Grayson County,” said Brooks.
According to FRYSCKy INC., surveys report that educators, parents, and community partners feel FRYSCs are a necessary component of Kentucky educational programming and that their programs are vital to students, empowering families and helping to improve schools.
“The motto of the FRYSC is ‘Whatever it takes,’ and each coordinator makes that a guiding principle in their center,” said Brooks.
Local FRYSCs are located in each of the Grayson County schools and work to remove non-academic barriers to student achievement, bridge the gaps to needed resources, and collaborate the resources of schools and communities for the success of students, families and communities.
