More than 200 students who have already earned career pathway certifications were celebrated today at a breakfast hosted in partnership with the Grayson County Chamber of Commerce. According to GC Technology Center Director Matt Hayes, students with industry certifications have a higher GPA, graduate at a rate of 98% compared to those who don’t, and make 7% more in lifetime earnings.
The Tech Center recently received end-of-program assessment results which mean college credit for students who pass them. This year, the school had a pass rate of 77% compared to 56% statewide. This translates to 333 hours of dual credit and tuition savings to students of $61 thousand based on KCTCS rates.
Guest speakers Robert and Mandi McKenzie shared their backgrounds and journeys, overcoming obstacles with determination and persistence along the way. Taking initiative, mentorship, and close, positive associations were among the themes. Both acknowledged life’s “bumps in the road,” and while plans will change, “never give up. If something’s not working, make a change.”
